Abstract
Several rules of English vowel shortening are summed up; the nature and the regular pattern of long and short vowel alternation in the shortening rules are analysed; and the reason for the formation of shortening rules is discussed. On this basis, the author tries to give a clear view on English vowel shortening: the pronounciation of English vowel is closely related with the positioning of word stress; the rules of English vowel shortening are natural rules brought about in conformiy with the demand of the harmony of English pronunciation; and to inquire into English vowel shortening rules is very important for understanding the link between English spelling and pronounciation.
