Abstract

Electrophysiological technique was employed to study the effect of estrogen on long term potentiation (LTP) in the dentate gyrus of hippocampus in the ovariectomized rats. The results showed that the population spike amplitude in the granule cellular layer of the dentate gyrus was significantly reduced after ovariectomy, which was antagonized by 17β estradiol replacement. Thus estrogen deficiency may lead to the decrease of the hippocampal synapse plasticity.
