Influence of Chinese Ancient Rhetoric on the Development of Word Meanings

Abstract
Chinese ancient rhetoric had a great influence on the development of word meanings. The influence can be bound in the following aspects: the frequent use of rhetoric tends to make the temporary functions of words permanent and thus create new meanings; the use of the same rhetoric changes words of different meanings into synonyms; the use of different rhetoric enables words of different meanings express the same meaning.
