Abstract
The hypothetical conjunctionShi(使), emerging in Pre-Qin period, was developed from generalized verbShi(使 ).The conjunction had experienced the evolution pattern ofcausative verb-generalized verb-hypothetical conjunction. In the phrasing ofShi(使)+N+V2, weakening of the possibility of the realization of event represented by V2, shifting of the time of the event and transforming of people involved in the event are main motivations of the grammaticalization ofShi(使).
