Abstract

2-(4-Chlorophenyl)ethanol(1) was synthesized by esterification and reduction from 2-(4-chlorophenyl)acetic acid(3).The structure was characterized by 1H NMR and MS.The appropriate reaction conditions were as follows: 3 was 30 mmol, ethanol was 120 mmol,n(3)∶n(SOCl2)∶n(NaBH4) was 1.0 ∶0.5 ∶1.6.The yield of 1 was over 95% by esterification at room temperature for 3 h and reduction at 75 ℃ for 5 h.
