Abstract
Asymmetric cell division serves as a cardinal mechanism for neural progenitor cells to differentiate during neurogenesis in both invertebrates like Drosophila, and vertebrates.Keys to this process are the localization polarity and asymmetric distribution of the cell fate determinants, which play vital roles in daughter cell fate decisions. This review outlined the factors implicated in regulating targeted localization of the fate determinants such as Numb, and mechanisms of their roles in the establishing cell fates during central and peripheral nervous system development. The conservation in evolution of regulatory mechanisms of cell fate determinants was also discussed.
