Abstract
Laminaria is a genus to which diverse brown macroalgae belong. The members of this genus have a life cycle consisting of a monoploid gametophyte generation and a diploid sporophyte generation.Vegetative growth of their gametophytes can be maintained at an appropriate condition, forming gametophyte clones. In this paper, the evolvement of the methodological development is briefly reviewed. The reviewed includes also the application of gametophyte clones in germplasm conservation, genetic and physiological research, and breeding and sporeling-raising of Laminaria.
