Modernization of Chinese Literary Study in Early 20~(th) Century

Early 20th century witnessed the beginning and transition of Chinese literary study. As the leading scholars in the studies of Chinese literary history in 20th century,Wang Guowei and Hu Shi differ from each other in their understanding of pure literature,view of literary history and methodology. These differences not only mirror their different cultural positions,academic backgrounds and research methods,but also suggest the inevitability of the transition from traditional to modern literary history study. Consequently,their differences reflect the characteristics of the modernization of Chinese literary study and are of great academic significance.
