Abstract

Objective To explore the clinical efficacy and complications of transurethral bipolar plasma kinetic resection of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Methods One hundred and twenty-two cases were analyzed retrospectively who received transurethral bipolar plasma kinetic resection of the prostate when they had been diagnosed with benign prostatic hyperplasia before the treatment from 2008 in our hospital.Prostate volume, operative time, intraoperative blood loss,International Prostatic Symptom Score (IPSS) and postoperative complications were evaluated. Results The mean prostate volume was 54.6 ml (30.7-87.3).Mean operative time was 106minutes (30~255) and mean blood loss was 71 ml (2-300).No patient exhibited any clinical sign of transurethral resection syndrome (TURS).The catheters were removed during 3-7 days postoperatively. The follow up period was 3-18 months.Prostatic symptom score decreased from 18.9 preoperatively to 7.1 at 3 months.Urinary infection (7 cases,5.7%) and urethral stenosis (4 cases,3.3%) were the commonest postoperative complications in this study. Conclusions Our results suggest that transurethral bipolar plasma kinetic resection of the prostate for benign prostatic hyperplasia should be a safe and effective procedure with few complications.
