Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor(VEGF)on cell apoptosis and the protective mechanisms of injured spinal cord. Methods The spinal cord injury(SCI)of Wistar rats was done by Allen,s weight dropping way impact on the posteriors of spinal cord T10.VEGF(5 ml/100 g)or normal saline was given to treatment group rats through catheter into subarachnoid space at 2 h、4 h、8 h、1 d、3 d、7 d after SCI.Apoptotic cells were detected by TUNEL stain. Results There was no apoptotic cells in spinal cord normal rat group. The apoptotic cells was found 2 h after SCI in VEGF treatment group and significantly less than normal saline treatment group(P0.01).Conclusion VEGF may protect injured spinal tissue by suppressing the cells apoptosis after SCI.
