Abstract

Objective To determine clinically whether amiodarone can significantly inhibit ventricular arrhythmias and increase left ventricular ejection fraction. Methods A double-blind,placebo-controlled study was conducted.Fifty-two congestive heart failure patients with heart enlargement, premature ventricular contractions(≥10 times /per hour),and left ventricular ejection fraction below 40% were randomly assigned to amiodarone treatment group(27 cases) or placebo group(25 cases). The primary endpoint was the effects of amiodarone on left ventricular ejection fraction and ventricular arrhythmia suppression. Results After amiodarone treatment, ventricular arrhythmias was effectively suppressed.A 8.8% increase in left ventricular ejection fraction was observed four weeks after treatment. Conclusion Amiodarone can effectively suppress arrhythmias and improve cardiac function when used in patients with mild to moderate heart failure.
