The outcomes of restoration of residual crown with furcation involvement following root separation

Objective To observe the results of restoration with post-and-core crown after crown lengthening and root separation of mandibular residual crown with serious furcation involvement. Methods Twenty-two mandibular molars of 22 patients with degree Ⅲ or Ⅳ furcation involvement were selected, including 19 mandibular first molars and 3 mandibular second molars. These teeth was restored with post-cores and PFM or all ceramic combined crowns following root separation and crown lengthening. 6-48 months follow-up was conducted to evaluate the clinical effect. Results Twenty-one teeth out of 22 showed good masticatory funcation, and were without self-conscious symptom. Radiographs 6 months after restoration showed interradicular osseous tissue has slight hyperplasia, lamina dura was seen. One of them was extracted 1 year after restoration because of durative periodontosis, osseous resorption and becoming loose. Conclusions Mandibular molar residual crown with serious furcation involvement could eliminate the furcation lesion by received root separation and crown lengthening, the outcomes of restoration was satisfied.
