Abstract

Objective:To investigate the effect of epimedium flavonoids(EF)on bone density of ovariectomized rats. Methods:A total of 60 SD rats(female,10 month)were randomly divided into normal control, model, estrogen, and low-dose,medium-dose,and high-dose EF groups,10 rats in each.Except the normal control group, rats in other groups were all ovariectomized bilaterally.Intervention measures were given for 90 days. The model group was injected with saline.Changes of total body, and femoral and lumbar vertebra bone density were observed and compared among the groups. Results:The total body bone density was significantly higher in the normal control and estrogen groups than it in the other groups(P0.05)and no significant difference was noted between the EF groups and model group(P0.05).The femoral bone density in all EF groups was higher than that in the model group(P0.05)and the lumbar vertebra bone density in the medium-and high-dose EF groups were higher than that in the model group(P0.05).Conclusion:EF can suppress the reduction of femoral and lumbar vertebra bone density while do not effect the total body bone density in ovariectomized rats.
