Abstract
Objective To investigate the validity of the scale of the activities of daily living(ADL) for nursing as a functional assessment(ADL scale for nursing).Method Medical records of the twenty five rehabilitation inpatients were reviewed.Among them, eighteen were stroke, seven traumatic brain injury. Left ADL scores( LADL), right ADL scores(RADL), ADL scores of hemiplegic side(HEMIADL),ADL scores of non hemiplegic side( NHEMIADL) were compared with scores of Functional Independence Measure (FIM),Barthel Index(BI),Fugl Meyer Motor Function test(FUGL), Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE),length of stay(LOS), using Spearman correlation for statistics analysis. Results RADL,LADL,HEMIADL,NHEMIADL had positive correlations with FIM,BI(r s = 0.5750 - 0.7604 ,P≤ 0.001 ) respectively,of them, HEMIADL having the highest correlation coefficient. The four indices of ADL scale for nursing had positive correlations with FUGL(r s= 0.4292 - 0.8260 ,P 0.001 - 0.05 ),of them, HEMIADL having the highest too. There were negative relationships between HEMIADL and LOS(r s=- 0.4730 ,P 0.05 ),and between LADL and LOS(r s=- 0.4007 ,P 0.05 ).Conclusion The ADL scale for nursing is valid in reflecting the ability of ADL in the brain damage patients with disability .The ADL scale for nursing is also able to predict the length of stay. The lower ADL score, the longer length of stay.
