A comparative study of venlafaxine XR and paroxetine in the treatment of patients with generalized anxiety disorder

Abstract

Objective To explore the efficacy and side effects of venlafaxine vs.paroxetine in the treatment of patients with generalized anxiety disorder(GAD).Methods A total of 65 patients with GAD were randomly divided into study group treated with venlafaxine and control group treated with paroxetine for 6 weeks.Efficacy and side effects were assessed with Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAMA) and the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) before treatment and at the 1st,2nd,4th,6th weekend of the treatment.Results There was no significant difference in effective power between study group and control group(86.2% vs.77.8%,P0.05).Score of HAMA in study group at 1st and 2nd weekend of the treatment decreased more obviously than that in control group(P0.05).There was no significant difference in adverse reaction rate between the two groups(P0.05).Conclusion The efficacy and safety of Venlafaxine is equvalent to Paroxetine in the treatment of GAD.But Venlafaxine takes effect faster.
