Abstract

Nine-year-old Magnolia officinalis subsp. biloba were used as the experimental material for the purpose of study on the selection and breeding of superior clones. Tree height, diameter at breast height, bark thickness, magnolol and honokiol and total phenolic content of bark were analyzed. Based on the tree selection standard, two superior clones were selected and bred by multiple steps of primary selection and re-selection and final election. Bark fresh weight per mu of two superior clones at eleven-year-old were 3 404 kg and 3 729. 6 kg,which were 79. 68% and 96. 84% higher than conventional varieties. Magnolol and honokiol and total phenolic content of bark were 2. 40%,3. 44% and 4. 38%,4. 48% and 6. 78%,7. 92% respectively, which were 51. 90%,117. 72% and 57. 55%,61. 15% and 55. 50%,81. 65% higher than conventional varieties.
