Abstract

Concrete durability is being quantified, and becoming part of reliability and service life design of reinforced concrete structures. On the basis of transferring the exposure chloride load, chloride penetration and resulted rebar corrosion into the time related environmental load and structure deterioration process,a practical system of service life design for structure has been established. In this paper, the latest development in this field has been reviewed, including the chloride's damaging effect on reinforced concrete structures, mathematical model for describing chloride ion penetration into concrete and the major parameters, the concept of service life reliability of structure based on concrete durability, the theoretical method of calculation, designing durable reinforced concrete structures.
