Bedside surgical ligation of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in low body weight premature infants

Abstract

Objective To discuss the experience of bedside surgical treatment of Patent Ductus Arteriosus(PDA) by ligature or clippling for premature infants in NICU.Methods Thirty-five operations(all infants failed conservative treatment) from Oct 2009 to May 2011 were reviewed.The lowest weight of infants was 720 grams.Results In 35 cases,no death occured during the operations.The recurrent laryngeal nerve was injured in one case.Two cases died of postoperative respiratory failure.Conclusion Surgical ligation of PDA,either by ligature and(or) clipping,is a good option for premature infants with PDA,especially for those medicine closure contraindicated or unsuccessful.The NICU department can meet the requirement of PDA surgery.
