Fault Detection and Correction of Switch-mode Hall Position Sensors for Brushless DC Motors

Abstract

Switch-mode Hall position sensor is a kind of sensors based on Hall effects,which is used for detecting BLDCM rotor position to direct motor commutation. However,Hall position sensor would have some faults,which will lead to incorrect commutation,in some case current would have a sudden jump,which may burn the motor. After the analysis of Hall position sensor fault mode,a fault detection and correction algorithm based on linear extrapolation was proposed. Algorithm detected and corrected Hall position sensor fault by predicting the time when next pulse came,which was calculated by former Hall position sensor information. Experimental result on one BLDCM shows that this algorithm is feasible.
