Research and practice of sediment problems in the Yangtze River by CRSRI

This paper presents an overview on the progress which has been achieved over the past 50 years in the researches of the Yangtze River sediment problems,including water/sediment movement,channel evolution,river training and solutions to sedimentation problem of large hydraulic projects built on the Yangtze River.A number of significant problems in need of further studies,including water and sediment resource utilization,joint operation of reservoirs on both Yangtze River mainstream and tributaries,interaction between the Yangtze River and Dongting Lake,integrated management of the lower Yangtze River,lakes and estuary,etc.,are proposed herein.
