Abstract
The non-modern characteristic of Chinese literature of the 20th century is a historical fact that can not be ignored. The confusing disordered rules of literature movement and the deliberate negligence of independent character of literature, make the movement totally deviate from the western modern literature mode that it pursues painstakingly. Western humane spirit and values, propagated in different historical period, show their stress on the mundane philosophy of Confucianism. A modern Chinese literature history, in a sense, is Chinese literature tradition under the guise of modern Chinese language, which either impossibly does away with its own unique historical heredity or finds it difficult to incorporate itself to the discursive system of western modem literature. The desolate and solemn petition for enlightenment of China modern writers, therefore, gives expression to their bewilderment of and anxiety about the modernity.
