Abstract
Chaos theory is an important branch of nonlinear sciences. It has rich connotation and extensive denotation. Chaos theory is applied widely in many fields. The essential characteristics of chaos are summed up. Based on nonlinear and internal stochastic property, sensitivity, ergodicity, fractal dimension property and wide bandwidth property of chaos, applications in engineering’s fields are introduced. Moreover, chaos studies and its applications progress in electric power engineering are also discussed, such as in stability analysis and control, economic dispatch and optimization, short-term load forecasting of electric power system and state monitoring of electrical equipment.
