Application of Solifenacin,a new antimuscarinic agent,to patients with overactive bladder

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Solifenacin in therapy of patients with overactive bladder.Methods A randomized,double-blind,controlled study was carried out in 78 patients with bladder overactivity,who received either Solifenacin(5 mg once daily) or Tolterodine(2 mg twice daily).Results After 12 weeks’treatment,the Solifenacin group showed a significant decrease in the Overactive Bladder Symptoms Score(OABSS) from(9.05 ± 2.38) before the treatment down to(4.06 ± 1.22) after the treatment,and in the times of urinating urgency from(3.97 ± 1.12) down to(1.13 ± 0.44);the Tolterodine group showed a significant decrease in the OABSS from(9.12 ± 2.53) down to(5.22 ± 1.45),and in the times of urinating urgency from(3.85 ± 1.26) down to(1.98 ± 0.56).The effects of Solifenacin on these two micturition variables were more significantly improved than that of Tolterodine(P 0.05).The total incidence of adverse events was 10% in the Solifenacin group and 21.05% in the Tolterodine group,between which there was a significant difference(P 0.05).Conclusion Compared with toherodine,Solifenacin,a new antimuscarinic agent,is more effective and safer in the treatment of overactive bladder.
