Abstract

Objective To observe the influence of glycerol on the responses of vestibular evoked myogenic potential(VEMP) and to explore the role of VEMP in the diagnosis of Meniere's disease. Method Glycerol tests were conducted on 10 patients with Meniere's disease and the amplitudes of VEMP were compared before and 3 hours after the intake of glycerol. Results Among 8 patients with Meniere's disease in one ear, 5 showed better amplitudes(2 patients' amplitudes increased and 3 reappeared)and 3 patients had worse VEMP amplitudes. For the two patients with bilateral Meniere's disease, one patient's amplitude reappeared and the other showed better amplitudes. Conclusion Glycerol can cause three changes in VEMP: ① reappearance of VEMP; ② decrease in VEMP amplitude; ③ increase in VEMP amplitude. The changes of VEMP before and after glycerol test are helpful for the diagnosis of Meniere`s disease.
