Abstract

Objective To study the effects of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNA) and nicotine on hamster cheek pouch and gastric mucosa. Methods TSNA and nicotine were used either alone or in combination to paint hamster's cheek mucosa 3 times per week for 6 months. Results Histologic changes, mainly epithelial hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis, were produced in nearly 100% of specimens. Conclusion TSNA is harmful to the hamster's cheek pouch mucosa and is possible to induce premalignant lesions.
