Abstract

The brief description of 89 civil aviation incidents whose primary causes were flight crew were obtained from Civil Aviation Administration of China between 2001 and 2004.The incidents were reviewed and coded by two experts in the field of aviation human factors on the basis of components of crew resource management and unsafe acts.Chi-square(χ2) test was performed to explore the strength of association between the two categories. The results demonstrate that some skills of crew resource management have strong association with unsafe acts of flight crew.Specifically, failure of communication, situation awareness, and decision-making could significantly increase the prediction of occurrence of decision error.Communication failure is also the index of predictive association for the occurrence of violation. The research reveals that the important role of individual skill of crew resource management in the unsafe acts of flight crew is based on the empirical evidences. This is,failure of crew communication, loss of situation awareness, and improper decision making process are significantly related with decision making error.Failure of crew communication is also significantly correlated with crew's violation. This type of data analysis can offer invaluable information for highlighting the pattern of the routes to unsafe acts and enhancing training system design through the further development of pertinent scenario-based training.
