Abstract

Filamentous fungi can secrete cellulases and related enzymes to decompose cellulosic substrates, and it is served as the primary producer of cellulase in the industry. This review gives an overview of the enzyme systems for cellulose hydrolysis and the new proposed mechanism of cellulose decomposition in filamentous fungi. The recent progress in cellulase exploration by the omics technologies is introduced, and the genetic strategies for improving cellulase efficiency and protein production are discussed.
