Abstract

A river and the sea interact with each other in the estuarine area and they perform complicated dynamic functions in the fluvial process. By combining a 1 Dimensional and a 2 Dimensional mathematical model, the complicated evolution in the Yellow River Estuary with high sediment concentration is calculated. The scope of computed field in the model consists of three parts, namely: a part of the river channel, the mouth and the surrounding offshore area. By using this model, sediment transport under the interaction of runoff, tide and wind driven currents and wave in the estuary has been simulated, and the patterns of erosion and sedimentation are studied. Furthermore, the long term bed deformation and the sedimentation areas of the river mouths of planned channels are also estimated.
