Comparison of clinical side effects of structured lipid and MCT/LCT

Objective To observe and compare clinical side effects of structured lipid and traditional MCT/LCT in order to reduce complications of TPN.Methods Fifteen patients who were to ready to accept middle-sized abdominal operations with normal level of ALT and AST were chosen,and randomly divided into two groups:structured lipid was given to experimental group,and MCT/LCT was given to the control for 5 days after operation.The side effects(including nausea/vomiting,headache and fever) and liver function(including ALT and AST) were observed and the results were compared.Results The incidence of side effects in the experimental group and the control was as follows:incidence of nausea/vomiting was 44% and 72%,of headache 40% and 68% and of fever 36% and 64%,respectively.ALT and AST were in normal range in both groups,and the levels of ALT and AST in the experimental group were lower than in the control group [ALT:(24±0.25) vs(28±0.35) U/L;AST:(20±0.19) vs(26±0.31) U/L].Conclusion Structured lipid has less side effects than traditional MCT/LCT.Neither of the two causes obvious hepatic function impairment.
