Abstract
The development background and theoretical basis of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics(SPH) were introduced. The application situations of the SPH method to the studies on free surface flows in aspects of the dam-break,sea ice, river ice and ship hydrodynamics etc.were reviewed. As a meshless pure Lagrange method, the SPH method was superior compared with the traditional simulation methods based on meshes. Finally, the shortcomings of the SPH method as well as the shortages in their studies were investigated, and the future study direction and development trend were put forward.
