Abstract
Objective:To study the significance of changes in serum inflammatory cytokines in patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome(MODS). Methods:Serum tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations were determined in 42 patients with MODS and 30 healthy volunteers(control group) by sandwich-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). Results: Serum TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 concentrations in MODS patients( 277.64± 54.36 ng/L, 240.97± 20.87 ng/L, 384.96± 73.19 ng/L)were markedly higher than that of control group( 23.37± 7.96 ng/L, 40.65± 5.87 ng/L, 30.26± 3.61 ng/L)(P 0.001);serum TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 concentration in death group ( 554.86± 95.69 ng/L, 338.87± 41.21 ng/L, 597.37± 118.36 ng/L)were higher than non-death group( 277.64±54.36 ng/L, 240.97±20.87 ng/L, 384.96± 73.19 ng/L)(P 0.01)。Conclusion:TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of MODS. Determination of serum TNF-α,IL-1β and IL-6 may be useful in prediction the severity and outcome of the illness.
