Abstract
The asymmetric distribution of convection associated with tropical cyclones making landfall along the east China coast was studied with FY-2 geostationary meteorological satellite data TBB.The convection in various quadrants of TC was examined during the period of-24 to 6 h relative to landfall. The convection to the southern side of the TC showed much intense than that to the northern side during the whole landfall period. The convection to the western side of TC was stronger than that to the eastern side before-8 h to the landfall and from then on the situation changed to the opposite. The asymmetric convection of TC was partly due to the vertical wind shear and storm motion, and partly because of the process of landfall to restrain the convection in the relevant quadrant.Besides, the orographic uplift along the east China was favored to enhance convection to the eastern side of TC.Contrasting the characteristics of convective asymmetry of TC landing on the south and east China, the main difference might be the angle between TC path relative to the coastline and the topography along the coast.
