Abstract

The UN Millennium Development Goals(MDGs) have been commonly accepted as a framework for measuring development progress.Education is an important part of the MDGs,and all the national governments have made great efforts to put it as priority.Since the founding of democratic government,South Africa has undertaken various educational reforms,including no-fee schools,National School Nutrition Programme,textbooks and transport subsidies,educator professional development,early childhood development and girls' education movement.These measures have promoted the Education Millennium Development Goals.However,South Africa still faces many challenges in the areas of free compulsory education,education quality,effect of HIV/AIDS epidemic,qualified educators and education equity.
