Abstract

A new spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace iron? was developed. In the sulfuric acid medium of pH 2 and in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol,Fe? reacts with potassium thiocyanate and methyl violet to form a complex compound with the composition of 1∶4∶1.The maximum absorption wavelength of the complex is located at 500 nm and the apparent molar absorptivity is e=3.65×10~5 L·mol~-1·cm~-1.Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0.027-6 μg /50 mL.RSD is 2.48% for 2 μg Fe?(n=6).The method has been used to the determination of trace iron in water.
