Soluble Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 in Serum of Patients with Graves Disease

Abstract

Objective[WT5,5”BZ]:To evaluate the alteration and clinical significance of serum soluble intercellular adhesion molecule (sICAM 1) in patients with Graves disease (GD) with or without Graves ophthalmopathy (GO). Methods:The sixty patients (25/60 with GO) untreated GD patients, 35 treated GD patients with normal thyroid function and 30 healthy controls were investigated. sICAM 1 was measured by the method of ELISA. Results:The serum levels of sICAM 1 in untreated GD patients were (331.15±42.23) pg/ml (with GO) and (266.13±27.10) pg/ml (without GO), sICAM 1 in treated GD patients and normal control subjects were (179.94±25.04) pg/ml and (141.045±2.839) pg/ml respectively. The concentrations of sICAM 1 were significantly higher in untreated (with or without GO) group than that in the other two groups. No statistical difference was found in serum sICAM 1 levels between patients with and without GO, although the serum concentration of sICAM 1 was higher in GO patients. There was also no difference of sICAM 1 between treated GD patients and the controls. sICAM 1 levels were markedly correlated with the concentrations of FT3, FT4 and TSH receptor antibody (TRAb), but no correlation was found between sICAM 1 and TSH levels. Conclusions:Serum level of sICAM 1 is markedly elevated in untreated GD patients, especially in patients with GO. The determination of sICAM 1 is helpful for the identification of active ophthalmopathy and abnormal immunological manner of Graves disease. [WT5,5”HZ][
