Abstract
Size structure of phytoplankton may play an important role in the regulation of several biological processes in the sea. The distribution of the total and size fractionated phytoplankton biomass in the euphotic zone of the East China Sea was studied in April 1994. Picoplankton, nanoplankton and netplankton accounted on average for ca 47, 33 and 20 % of the total chlorophyll. From the result, it showed that nanoplankton was dominated in the inner continental shelf area, picoplankton was dominate in the outer shelf and open sea, and netplankton contributed more chlorophyll between the above two areas.
