Abstract

The New Enlightenment Movement, which attracted some liberal intellectuals' active participation, was launched by the Communist Party of China for the purpose of coordinating the establishment of Anti-Japanese United Front. From the beginning the movement was imbued with divergence. The communists and liberals had different explanations on the concepts such as freedom of thinking, new philosophy and reason. Furthermore, the communists worked out a long-term political objective and actual targets of political struggle for the movement. When the Anti-Japanese War entered into the stalemate stage, the movement was not suitable to the changed conditions. As a result, the communists were not enthusiastic in the movement anymore. Later the New Enlightenment Movement was replaced by the Movement of Academic Sinification.
