The influence of combined spinal-dpidural analgesia on the speed of cervical dilation

Abstract

Objective To assess the influence of combined spinal-epidural analgesia(CSEA)used in labor analgesia on the speed of the cervical dilation.Methods One hundred healthy nulliparous parturients in spontaneous labor with singleton,vertex,full-term fetuses were enrolled in a double-blinded trial when their cervical dilation was in3-4cm.The patients were randomly assigned to CSEA group(receive CSEA labor analgesia)and non-analgesia group(receive no labor analgesia).Data were collected on cervical dilation,labor progress,outcome of labor and neonate status.Results The speed of cervical dilation was no difference between groups before enrollment(P0.05),CSEA group was faster in cervical dilation than non-analgesia group after enrollment(P0.05).The second stage of labor progress in CSEA group was longer than non-analgesia group,but the time was within2hours.The outcome of labor and the neonate status were not different between two groups(P0.05).Conclusion CSEA used in labor analgesia of healthy nulliparous parturients can inˉcrease the speed of cervical dilation,but may delay the second stage of labor progress.
