Abstract

The traditional subsistence of Li people in Baoli Village of Hainan Province, the subject of this paper, consisted of cultivation of rice, collection of wild plants, and hunting of animals. Then, cash cropping was introduced in late 1980s and has been intensified consistently. This has changed not only the subsistence of Baoli villagers but also the demographic behaviors of the people. Land use for agriculture and the methods for cash earning have also changed.
