Abstract

The separation of high-polar and hydrophilic small molecules has been paid significantly attentions in varying fields. Theoretically, the samples of strong hydrophilicity and polarity are retained on the polar stationary phase. They are eluted and enriched by the polar component in the elution solvents. The reversed-phase liquid chromatography( RPLC) is widely used in analysis and preparation, but it is relatively weak for the retention of high-polar and hydrophilic molecules. Then a new type of chromatographic-hydrophilic interaction chromatography( HILIC) has been paid more attentions to the separation of polar molecules in recent years. The advantages of HILIC mode separations include the simple mobile phase composed, high separation efficiency, better compatibility with MS,etc. It has become one of the most popular chromatographic technologies. As adsorbents, cyclodextrins and their polymers are spirited in separations for hydrophilic interaction chromatography stationary phase. With its unique inclusion characteristic, cyclodextrin will play an important role in the separation and analysis field and the identification of organic molecular. And it has a huge potential in the applications of multidimensional chromatography and chiral separation. This review attempts to show the advances of HILIC and summarizes the use of HILIC stationary phases containing cyclodextrin.
