Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical significance of serum procalcitonin(PCT) andendotoxin to the diggnosis of sepsis. Methods We selected 42 cases of patients without sepsis and 46 sepsic patients; and took routine testings, cultured suspected samples on the first day of studying, monitored serum procalcitonin and endotoxin for all cases. Results The serum levels of procalcitonin in sepsis group were significantly higher than non-sepsis group. More severe the sepsis, higher was the serum levels of procalcitonin. If PCT levels(≥0 5ng/ml) was taken as diagnostic standard, the test's sensitivity and specificity were 87.0% and 92.9% respectively, Butendotoxin concentrations have no significant difference in two groups. In sepsis group, there areno significant relationship between PCT and endotoxin levels. Conclusions The serum levels of PCT might help to diagnosis sepsis, and PCT can reflect the severity of sepsis.
