DENG Xiao-ping's Thinking on Socialist Modernization Construction in China

In the arduous struggle led by the CPC in pursuance of the long-standing aspiration of the Chinese people for modernization, DENG Xiao-ping persisted on the principle to combine China's practice with the general law of modernization, stressed the modern political conception and social consciousness of mobilizing the whole nation to do everything possible to catch up the advanced countries and put forward the idea that the national destiny hinges on socialist modernization, thus giving an answer to the question of why China must attain the goal of socialist modernization. He worked out the Chinese-type strategy of long-term development and opened the developmental road of solving the problem of food and clothing first, securing a fairly comfortable life next and then realizing modernization by and large, thus giving an answer to the question of what is Chinese-type modernization. He urged to keep the economic development as the central task, vigorously develop the productive forces, respect knowledge and trained personnel and speed up modernization in China through the reform and opening-up, thus giving an answer to the question of how to achieve socialist modernization in China. In short, he provided for socialist modernization in China a whole set of theory, strategy and steps and led the Chinese people onto a completely new road of quick modernization and national rejuvenation.
