Abstract

Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of several laboratory methods currently used in the diagnosis of multiple myeloma( MM),including serum protein electrophoresis( SPE),serum and urine Bence Jones protein electrophoresis( BJPE),immunofixation electrophoresis( IFE),and immunoglobulin light chain quantification.Methods SPE,BJPE,IFE and light chain quantification were performed in both serum and urine samples from 33 MM patients and 57 non-MM patients normal controls.Results M band was detected in 26 cases out of 33 MM patients using serum protein electrophoresis,accounting for 79%; in addition,the concentration of κ and λ light chain,and the κ / λ ratios in patients were significantly different from the controls( P 0.01).Conclusion Our study indicate that urine κ / λ ratio is meaningful for the diagnosis of MM patients with positive urinary protein.Integrately using these methods is of great significance in the diagnosis and typing of MM.
