Abstract

The utilization of the heterosis between indica and japonica is an important approach to increasing the yield potential of hybrid rice. The indica compatible japonica lines (ICJL), the japonica lines compatible with indica, can be used to breed the hybrid rice of super high yield potential by exploiting the heterosis between indica and japonica. As restorers of super high yield hybrid rice, the ICJLs should be characterized by japonica genome, high compatibility with indica, genetic coordination with indica, good agronomic characters, and carrying some genes of agronomic importance. The breeding system of super high yield hybrid rice established by the use of ICJLs was discussed.
