Abstract

Objective To observe the efficacy and security of oxcarbazepine as a single drug therapy for temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods Thirty children with temporal lobe epilepsy during the period from May 2009 to May 2012 were randomly divided into carbamazepine treatment group(n = 15) and oxcarbazepine treatment group(n = 15).Frequency of seizures, abnormal EEG rate, clinical efficiency and side effects were collected and analyzed. Results The clinical efficiency of the oxcarbazepine treatment group was better than the carbamazepine treatment group. The frequency of seizures, abnormal EEG rate and side effects of the oxcarbazepine treatment group was lower than that of the carbamazepine treatment group. Conclusion The oxcarbazepine has better efficacy and security as single drug therapy for temporal lobe epilepsy of children.
