Abstract

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effects of intranasal interferon-gamma(IFN-γ) on allergic rhinitis. Methods 32 rats were randomly divided into 4 groups(8 in each),and allergic rhinitis models were developed through the administration of a mixture of ovalbumin(OVA) and aluminum hydroxide into the nostrils of the rats.Group A was treated as a negative control group sensitized and triggered by normal saline instead of OVA.Group B was sensitized and triggered by OVA,and then treated with phosphate balance solution.Group C was sensitized and triggered by OVA,followed by the administration of IFN-γ.Group D was sensitized and triggered by OVA,and then treated with inhalation of beclomethasone dipropionate. On 39th day,the serum levels of interleukin-4(IL-4),interleukin-5(IL-5)and IgE were determined by ELISA.Results The serum levels of IL-4,IL-5 and IgE in group C decreased significantly compared to those in group B.Conclusion IFN-γ administered intranasally may prevent and treat AR,possibly by inhibition of the biosynthesis of both IL-4 and IL-5 and decrease the total IgE and IgE in the serum levels.
