Efficacy of Finasteride in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia

Objective To research on the reasonable program of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH)treated with medicine.Methods 90 patients with BPH were divided into 3 groups.30 patients in the experimental group were treated with 5α-reductases inhibition (Finasteride).30 Patients in the first control group were treated with α-adrenoceptor blocking drugs (Harnal).30 Patients in the second control group were treated with Finasteride and Harnal.The grades of symptom,the maximal urinary flow rate and the changes of prostate volume were analyzed respectively after 3 months,6 months and 1 year of treatment.Results The grades of symptom and the maximal urinary flow rate of the two control groups were better than those of the experimental group after 3 months'treatment(P0.05).There were no significant difference in the grades of symptom and the maximal urinary flow rate between the two control groups and the experimental group after 6 months' treatment(P0.05),while the reduction in prostate volume of the experimental group were greater than those of the first control group(P0.05).There were significant differences in the grades of symptom,the maximal urinary flow rate and the prostate volume between the experimental group and the first control group( P0.05),but no significant differences between the experimental group and the second control group(P0.05)after 1 year of treatment.Conclusion Benign prostatic hyperplasia can be treated with Finasteride and Harnal for 6 months and then with Finasteride alone.
