Abstract

Objective To obtain the epidemiological information on disease status in untreated chronic periodontitis patients. Methods Two hundred untreated chronic periodontitis patients were selected from employed adults in an institute located in urban area. They were aged from 22 to 64. Periodontal measurements were performed on all teeth except the third molars, 6 sites for each tooth. Probing depth, attachment loss, and bleeding on probing were measured. Results Mean attachment loss in this population was 1.87mm. The severity of attachment loss increased with patients' age. It was more severe in male than in female, and more severe in bleeding sites than in non-bleeding sites. The most severe attachment loss occurred in mandibular incisors and the maxillary first molars. Maxillary canines were the least in AL severity. Conclusion The severity of chronic periodontitis was associated with patient age, gender, gingival inflammation, and manifested site-specificity.
