Abstract
Oil and gas are generated from organic matter in source rock.Therefore,organic-matter abundance, type and maturity can determine hydrocarbon-generating potential. With the biggest potential in Liaodong Bay,the Liaozhong Depression is rich enough to be commercially exploited. For source rock in this depression, its geochemical characteristics are evaluated by some analysis, including organic-matter content, pyrolysis, microscopy, and vitrinite reflection ratio. Results show that(1)there are three suites of formation from moderate to good, including Sha 1,Sha 3 and Dong 3 members(;2)the best source rock accounts for 70 % of total rock samples(;3)the main organic-matter types contain II1 and II2;and(4)hydrocarbon-generating threshold is about 2500 m of burial depth.
