The Language Structure and Artistic Style of Shrine Sacrificial Songs in the Han Dynasty

Abstract

From the documents,the Han Dynasty shrine sacrificial songs which are mainly used outside are those written by Shu Sun-tong and San Hou Zhi Zhang which was used when offering sacrifice to original shrine(that is Da Feng Ge by Bang).During the period of Emperor Wu in the West Han,about ten persons including Sima Xiangru wrote Jiao Si Ge containing nineteen chapters,which are also used as shrine sacrificial songs sometimes.Those used inside are mainly Fang Zhong Ge containing seventeen chapters.Many researchers in the past merely compared them with Chu Ci literally,and considered that their language structure is succession and development of Chu Ci.But as a matter of fact,Emperor Gao Zu and other persons didn't obtain very high accomplishment in knowledge,just as the saying goes: Liu and Xiang never read.Because Gao Zu took a fancy for Chu Tone,the culture has strong regional color.And his liking affected the imperial court including the creation of sacrificial songs to a large extent.So,from the deep sense,Han Dynasty shrine sacrificial songs' creation and their language structure are all decided by the representative regional language in Chu during the West Han Dynasty and by the requirement of this king of musical words.The Han Dynasty shrine sacrificial songs which are represented by them,reflected simple and unadorned,magnificent appearance,solemn and ingenious,elegance and profound,instruction in music and other artistic styles.
